how is a-(b-c) = a-b + c?

OpenStudy (goformit100):

distributive law

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you expand on that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i thought distributive law was on multiplication for a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes it is in multiplication.. Though - as (-1) and then distribute -1 to the brackets.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

-(b-c) is the same as -1(b-c) --------------------------------- Use the distributive law to get -1*b -1*(-c) From here, -1*b = -b and -1*(-c) = +c or just c So we then get -b + c So -(b-c) turns into -b + c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so a is -1 since there is a - sign for the distributive property?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no 'a' is just a variable I really meant to say a-(b-c) is the same as a-1(b-c) but I left that first 'a' part out because it wasn't relevant

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait what if its....-8 - (1+1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait thats order of operations
