I need to write about homeless for my research paper. I wanted to write about causes that made homeless, problem of homeless, and the solution. Do you have any ideas for the thesis statement??
poverty is at is highest rate since 1965, read an article in th Cincinnati Eq. July 23.
A thesis is the answer to the "big question." What is your paper asking? Do you think there is an end in site for homelessness? Are the solutions you researched permanent? Or, do you think the problem will only get worse? Your thesis depends on where you are going with your paper. I hope this makes sense.
Peeps, you make a valid point that the thesis is the answer to the "big question" of the paper. More importantly, however, you need to be able to prove your thesis with supporting evidence in the body of the paper. Your opinion on homelessness will not be sufficient evidence to prove your thesis. You need to support any claims you make with credible sources (peer-reviewed journals, books, census bureau statistics, etc.). If you wanted your thesis to be about the causes of homelessness, your thesis might be a statement predicting an upward or downward trend in homeless populations in the U.S. that should be expected based on certain known factors (low job security, unstable housing market, etc.). The reader must be persuaded that your thesis is irrefutable by the time they finish reading your paper.
I don't know what research ujuge321 has done or not done. He or she may very well have proven that the homeless problem in this country will, in fact, become worse. I was only giving examples. That said, I feel that an opinion on the subject is very important. You have to start somewhere, with your research. Why not start where you are most interested? If you think the homeless situation can be eliminated in 10 years, then you will probably be able to support that with research. You don't have to necessarily prove your thesis. You just have to prove it's reasonable plausibility.
^ very true @peeps
I agree with you, Peeps. Replace "prove" with "justify". Justify your thesis with credible evidence beyond just your opinion. Your opinion can certainly serve as a starting point to develop your thesis, but more support would be needed to prove that your thesis is a reasonable plausibility.
"Justify" is a much better word. Thank you.:) You make a good point.
