if you only count one pair of parallel sides, then it's a trapezoid (and not a parallelogram)

If it has two set of parallel lines. For example if the bottom and top lines are parallel and the left and right lines are parallel then it is a parallelogram.(:

There are three ways for you to prove it to be a parallelogram using the sides.
If both pairs of opposite sides are parallel, then it's a parallelogram.
If both pairs of opposite sides are congruent, then it's a parallelogram.
If one pair of opposite sides are both congruent and parallel.
