Yeah - taking photographs from a satellite was a breakthrough because it allows us to get information about reflected radiation (e.g. light) from distant planets without the noisy background of radiation from the earth's surface and atmosphere! Imagine trying to take a picture when you are driving in your car - it's like the difference between looking through your windshield when it is tinted, covered with frost (or rain) and dirty - versus sticking your camera out the window for a better shot. With more accurate information about what the universe looks like, we can generate better theories about it!
