What do you want to do here?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
solve for c
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
any ideas on how to do that?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
no can you help me?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
we want to isolate c

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
so we need to move over that 'ab' term
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
how do we do this?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
umm i have no idea :/
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
ab - c = 9
0 + ab - c = 9
Do we add ab to both sides? or subtract ab from both sides?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i would say subtract

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
good
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
ab - c = 9
0 + ab - c = 9
- ab -ab
-c = 9 - ab
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
We're not done though. We want c and NOT -c
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
So how do we fix this?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
divide negative c?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
by what?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
-c divided by <some number> = c
What is <some number> ???
OpenStudy (anonymous):
9??
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
something negative divided by some number becomes positive
What is that "some number" ?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
example
-12 divided by x = 12
what is x ?

-1?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
good
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
So -c divided by -1 = c
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
so we must do this to both sides...or equivalently...we must do it to EVERY term
So divide every term by -1
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so the problem you gave me was
ab - c = 9
0 + ab - c = 9
- ab -ab
-c = 9 - ab

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
yes, now divide everything by -1
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
to completely isolate c
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so its -c= 9 -ab
-1 -1
like that?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
Like this
\[\Large ab - c = 9\]
\[\Large ab - c = 9\\-ab \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ -ab\]
\[\Large - c = 9-ab\]
\[\Large \frac{-c}{-1} = \frac{9}{-1}+\frac{-ab}{-1}\]
OpenStudy (anonymous):
is it
-ab - 9

close....
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
9 divided by -1 = -9
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
but -ab divided by -1 is NOT -ab
OpenStudy (anonymous):
because negative times a negative is a positive
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
and a negative divided by a negative = positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):
so it would be 9 + ab?
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
no
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
9 divided by -1 = -9
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok let me try this again
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
ok

ab - 9
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
you got it
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
\[\Large ab - c = 9\]
\[\Large ab - c = 9\\-ab \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ -ab\]
\[\Large - c = 9-ab\]
\[\Large \frac{-c}{-1} = \frac{9}{-1}+\frac{-ab}{-1}\]
\[\Large c = -9+ab\]
\[\Large c = ab-9\]
OpenStudy (anonymous):
thanx for the help!
