Hey guys I'm really far behind, what should I do to keep pace?
This seems like two questions. To keep pace in a college math course... Attend every class and spend 2 hours doing practice problems for every hour in class. Don't be surprised if calculus takes even more time in order to really nail it down. Catching up: It really takes time, but further it takes an attitude change. The reason that one gets behind in calculus is that something else was more important (other classes, family, social life, staring at the wall, etc...). You have to first decide that calculus is worthy of your attention and that you will honestly spend the time on it that is required. Quite frankly, the time it will take to catch up will probably be equal to the time that you haven't spent on it according to the rule above. 1) Start with where you got lost. Calculus builds on itself; its hard to skip around. 2) Pick an example problem and examine it until you get it. Go to the exercises and determine which group of practice problems were created with that example problem in mind (that's how a lot of problem sets are created, use that idea). If you can do the last problem in the small group that pertains to the example, move to the next example and the subsequent block of practice problems. If you can't do the hardest problem, step back to a previous problem and work your way up. Depending on the layout of the text and your speed in comprehending, you may wind up doing 1 out of every 7 practice problems. 3) Keep going. You will miss some subtle details and little tricks and methods by studying this way, but it is faster than the normal way of digesting it all and you might get by on the tests.
