is all living things composed of cells? New question..All living things have the following characteristics except: A. responsiveness to external and /or internal stimuli. B. Utilization of energy C. They are composed of cells. D. growth. E. reproduce sexually.....I'm thinking E, But do's that include asexual. Or I'm thinking C because bacteria is living and it is only one cell....So, any help out there C or E

OpenStudy (wach):

An arguable question depending on what your definition of 'living' is ;)

Atoms

Well, an example I could think of is the virus. They don't have cells, but like everything, have atoms.

However this perception changed in 1935 when the tobacco mosaic virus was crystallized and it was shown that the particles lacked the mechanisms necessary for metabolic function. Once it was established that viruses consist merely of DNA or RNA surrounded by a protein shell, it became the scientific view that they are more complex biochemical mechanisms than living organisms.

All living things consist of cells. ALL. I can't think of a single exception -- viruses and prions are generally considered non-living.

Whoops, reposting my last answer (which I have already deleted) because I read the question wrong (hey, it's morning, and I haven't had my cup of tea yet.) The thing that I did not delete above remains correct. Sexual reproduction is, by definition, different from asexual reproduction (the "a" in "asexual" means "not", so... "not sexual"), and there are MANY living organisms that reproduce asexually.
