A store is going to make a midprice tea by mixing a high quality tea with a low quality tea. They are going to use 15 lbs of a low quality tea that costs $1.25 per pound and 5 lbs of a high quality tea that costs $4.15 per pound. How much should they charge for their tea? I get TONS of questions like these and I have NO CLUE how to solve them... Please help! the answers are: A) $0.27 B) $1.34 C) $1.98 D) $3.43

OpenStudy (shane_b):

This one is pretty simple. They are going to use 15 lbs of tea that costs 1.25/lb. Therefore, the cost of that ingredient is 15x1.25=$18.75 They are also going to use 5lbs of tea that costs 4.15/lb. Therefore, the cost of that ingredient is 5x4.15=$20.75. So the total for the batch will be $18.75+$20.75=$39.50.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait... I'm confused.... My teacher kinda glazed over this topic...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What exactly do I have to do?

OpenStudy (shane_b):

I'm not sure how else to explain it...I summed up the ingredients times their costs. What part of my first answer is confusing you?

hero (hero):

@Shane_B, you're not done explaining.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dont understand how we arrive at the numbers?

hero (hero):

The question asks how much should they charge for the tea, not just what the total price is.

OpenStudy (shane_b):

Well, they should charge at least some value > $39.50...

OpenStudy (shane_b):

@Sunshine447: If you buy 5 apples and each costs 0.20c, how much did they cost?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

$1

hero (hero):

They're going to charge something greater than $39.50?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where do you come up with the 39.50?

OpenStudy (shane_b):

@Hero: I see where you're going with this...thanks. I didn't pay close enough attention to the first part of the question.

OpenStudy (shane_b):

@Sunshine447: the total costs of 15lbs of low quality tea and 5 lbs of high quality tea is $39.50. I arrived at that based on multiplying the lbs of each times the price of each per pound...then added them together.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay....

OpenStudy (shane_b):

The price is per lbs and if they want to charge a mid-price for this tea, it will be:\[\frac{$39.50}{20}=$1.975/lb=$1.98/lb\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhh okay! Thanks! I've never been good at word problems... too many words.... haha

OpenStudy (shane_b):

No problem...and thanks @Hero for pointing out what I missed.
