Hey babes! One more problem I need help on, thanks sooo much! xx

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why don't you start with a sketch?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because Im a little lazy right now (; lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@telliott99 Okay I sketched it out and I am so confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

back

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yaay :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So.. the problem says that the second trapezoid is similar to the first one, it'll have the same ratio of sides, same angles, but a different size.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The length of the segment PQ is ? The length of the segment UV is ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

P- (-5,7) Q-(-2,7) U- (-2,-1) V-(7,-1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I wonder if you sketched? :) Anyway PQ is horizontal, its length is the difference is x-values which is 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did sketch, I swear! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what is the length UV?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dunnno. I really suck at this stuff

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you sketch it, you will see that the length UV is 9. So the second trapezoid is bigger by that ratio of 9/3 = 3. That's all you get for now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here what I did...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@telliott99 look what i attached please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

back

OpenStudy (anonymous):

go look at my other post

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I saw the figure, it looks great!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now, in the problem the points are U and V, they are labeled E and F on your figure, OK?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i know thats because of the program

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I think you can count on the x-axis and see that the distance from E to F (or U to V) is equal to 9. Yes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now the problem says that UVWX is going to be just like PQRS only maybe a different total size. But it'll be what they call in geometry "similar".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, okay gotcha. thats what was really confusing me what the size

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Similar means that every angle in UVWX will be equal to the corresponding angle in PQRS, and every length (side) in UVWX will be scaled by the same factor, which is 3.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So now the tricky part. In your diagram the point D corresponds to S (-8,3). How far down and to the left from A is it in the figure?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is -3 in the x-direction and -4 in the y-direction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okayyy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, multiply by 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

each number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll do it, it's -9 in the x-direction and -12 in the y-direction. OK?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah thats what i go too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what you need to do is start from point U or E (-2,-1) and go -9 in the x-direction and -12 in the y-direction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay one sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but it makes a straight line

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Of course.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ABCD is a trapezoid. Do you know what a trapezoid is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

rather PQRS

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, OK. This is going to be the slanted left side of our new, bigger trapezoid UVWX.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

k

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure you're with me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the coordinates of the new point are (-11, -13).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alrighty

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now the last one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Start from point Q (-2,7) go to point R (2,3) that is 4 units to the right on the x-axis and 4 units down on the y-axis. Can you do the multiplication by 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait how did you get (-11,-13) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That was starting from point U or E (-2,-1) and going -9 in the x-direction and -12 in the y-direction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you prefer, 9 in the minus-x direction and 12 in the minus-y direction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright jerk, Im not that fluttering dumb. Peace ✌

OpenStudy (anonymous):

fluttering*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bye

OpenStudy (anonymous):

effing*
