help please........

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A student made the table shown below to prove that XY is equal to YZ. Sample Response Statements Justifications 1. NY = MY Given 2. m∡MYX = m∡NYZ Given 3. m∡XNY = m∡ZMY Given 4. 5. m∡MYZ = m∡MYX + m∡XYZ Angle Addition Postulate 6. m∡MYZ = m∡NYZ + m∡XYZ Substitution 7. m∡NYX = m∡MYZ Transitive Property 8. triangleXYN ≅ triangleZYM ASA postulate 9. XY = ZY CPCTC A. Provide the missing statement and justification in the proof. B. Using complete sentences, explain why the proof would not work without the missing step.

OpenStudy (nottim):

@radar can usually get these questions. maybe he's figuring this out right now

OpenStudy (radar):

Is there a figure that identifies all those points, segments, and angles for this sample?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh sorry i forgot to post it .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (radar):

Thanks I now have something to look at.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (radar):

At first brush I believe we are looking at two similar triangles, let look at it and read the steps.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok.

OpenStudy (radar):

To be honest, I can not see what step 4. should be, as it seems to prove it without any thing in step 4. I will continue to study it and see what they thought was necessary to be there.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. ima see if i can find a question similar so i can see what they are asking for as well? bc honestly i have no clue

OpenStudy (radar):

Maybe something like this: 4. m<XYZ =180 - m<XYM-m<ZYN Form a straight line. This is just a guess.

OpenStudy (radar):

Do you have the choices (is this a multiple guess test?)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not its not a multiple choice but i have an idea of wat i thnk it is one secc let me relook and thnk n i'll show yu wat my guess is and yu tel me if it sounds correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nvm i thought i had something i didnt realize it was already there

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg radar i know wats missing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

an angle addition postulate is missing

OpenStudy (radar):

It might be: 4,NX =MZ Congruent triangles MYZ and NYX (ASA) corresponding side.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no thats there. its #8 but ima link you to a similar question. and this is how i found out the angle postulate thats missing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/4fb434b4e4b05565342a1a33 in this question its basically the same just different letters and a different missing part .but if you look carefully you can see the angle postulate they have then if yu look at my question one is missing

OpenStudy (radar):

Would that be m<NYX=m<NYZ + m<XYZ Angle addition postulate However, I thought they covered this in step 6 using substitution ????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one sec ima show you let me write it down first bc i really think thts it .

OpenStudy (radar):

The figures are similar one is just flipped over from the other, I think you may be onto something.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

BOOM.! i got it . ok look so its m<NYZ = m< NYZ + m< XYZ = ANGLE ADDITION POSTULATE

OpenStudy (radar):

You have <NYZ twice is that a typo?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yea lol sorry

OpenStudy (radar):

Do you mean m<NYX for the first one like I had in my post above.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

rerun ......... BOOM ! i got it . ok look so its m<NYX = m< NYZ + m< XYZ = ANGLE ADDITION POSTULATE

OpenStudy (radar):

look at my post, the 8th one above this one. We are on the same track.

OpenStudy (radar):

I am still wondering about step 6 ......but I guess it is necessary.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg i feel so smart

OpenStudy (radar):

Good luck with these, these kind of problems are not my cup of tea. lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh . you've helped me figure out how to use my brain again lol now can i have to figure out how explain why the proof would not work without the missing step.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that was such a typo lol

OpenStudy (radar):

I never had to do these when I was going through school.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats crazy my classes are all about this . im tkn 3 math glasses in one .

OpenStudy (radar):

Good luck with these, these kind of problems are not my cup of tea. lol

OpenStudy (radar):

I guess you can say without that step you would not be able to prove the two triangles were congruent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha typo again i ment math classes

OpenStudy (radar):

It would be the angle side angle (ASA) postulate

OpenStudy (radar):

Three math classes in one, obviously this is the "trig" part. Well it is pass my bedtime here in the Ozarks of MO. Agn good luck. & good night.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you very much and have a wonderful night .

OpenStudy (radar):

I think you have your problem solved and no thanks to me, you did it on you own.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The figure shows triangle ABC. A segment joins point D on side BC and point E on side BA. Segment BD is 18 and segment BE is 14. Which statement must be true to prove that segment DE is parallel to segment CA? 1 : EA = 2 : DC 6 : DC = 7 : EA 7 : EA = 9 : DC 4 : DC = 1 : EA

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so whats the answer to part B ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@radar @cemantha

OpenStudy (radar):

As I said 2 yrs ago, it appears they proved triangles MYZ and NYX congruent using the ASA (AngleSideAngle) postulate without step 4, Then using corresponding parts of congruent triangles to prove XY and YZ equal.
