If I'm simplifying 2a^0, what does the zero do? I've never seen that before and I'm confused ):

OpenStudy (phi):

a^0 = 1 (except if a is 0)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would the answer be 3?

OpenStudy (phi):

2*1 is not 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nvm, my answer choices are 2a 0 2 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 2a?

OpenStudy (phi):

no 2a^1 is 2a 2a^0 is 2*1 what is 2 times 1?

OpenStudy (phi):

if you are wondering why a^0 is 1, it "fits a pattern" 1/a is a^(-1) a is a^1 multiply a^-1 * a^1 we add exponents to get a^0 but we know 1/a * a = 1 so a^0 must be 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is just 2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just don't understand where the A would go then...
