perpendicular
OpenStudy (anonymous):
12x+4y=16..............1
27x+9y=40..........2
from equation 1
12x=16-4y
x=16-4y/12 now put the value of x in 2nd equatipn.

i need to know how to solve.. not just the answer @best.shakir
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok so just use substitution ?

emily, question is asking to tell whther the two lines given are
"parallel" or "perpendicular" or "neither"
right ?
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
find slope of each line,
if they are equal => lines are parallel
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
u know how to find slope ?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yes, its -3 correct? (sorry i was afk)

or are they perpendicular?
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
np
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
find slope for both lines
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
both u getting -3 ?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yes

if both slopes are equal, they are parallel

ok, i get it now. Havent done that kind of problem in so long, i forgot.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i have another, different tho, you have time?
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
yeah np ;)
sure post... .

and for perpendicular lines,
if you multiply both slopes, you will get -1
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
-4x-5y = -15 ----(1)
2x + 2y = 6 ------(2)
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
multiply second equation with 2
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
-4x-5y = -15 ----(1)
4x + 4y = 12 ------(2)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
add both equations
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
4x cancels
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
-5y+4y = -15+12
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
-y = -3
y=3
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok , i knew that i had to do that.. i was just second guessing my self this is most stuff we learned in the beginning.

put y=3 in second equation,
2x + 2(3) = 6
2x + 6 = 6
2x = 0
x= 0
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
you refreshing algebra I is it...
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
nice :)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yes, we have our final exam tomorrow :), have time for a word problem?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i can post new question so i can give u medals

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
np... u already gave me so many medals... so its okay lol
OpenStudy (anonymous):
haha ok :3

oh ok. u already posted... let me c
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
Easy..
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
time = distance/speed
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
u know this relation right ?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
oh . see? i forget the simple stuff

we need to find speed of Chuck,
lets call that x
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
time travelled by Chuck = distance /speed = 66/x -------- (1)
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
Dana's speed is 6mph less than chuck, so dana speed = x-6
time travelled by Dana = distance/speed = 54/(x-6) -----------(2)
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
since time travelled by both Chuck & Dana is same,
(1) = (2)
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
\(\frac{66}{x} = \frac{54}{x-6}\)

\(66(x-6) = 54x\)
66x- 396 = 54x
12x = 396
x = 33
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
Chuck travels at 33 mph
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok, sweet. thanks . you're really helping me out. im just trying to make sure i fully understand for tommorow. i will open a new question now :)
ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):
ok ty.. :)
