How to simplify y - 6 = -3(X-1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what does "simplify" mean in this context? solve for \(y\) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no just simply the equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can multiply out on the right using the distributive law \[y-6=-3x+3\] then add 6 to both sides and get \[y=-3x+9\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but that his "solve for y" the word "simplify" has no meaning in this context you can also write in "standard form" as \[y+3x=9\] if you like no one form is any "simpler" than the other "simplify" is the lazy math teacher way of saying "give me the answer i want"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

look at this this is the quesstion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@satellite73 can you do it??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes you have the line \(y=-3x+12\) so you know the slope of this line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it is -3
