why mitochondria is maternal organelle?
Presumably because they come from the mother.
why they don't come from father?
Mitochondrial DNA has been believed passed from one generation to the next only along a maternal line of inheritance
I didn't mean that I mean why mitochondria come from mothers not fathers what reason exist that father can't pass their mitochondria to their offspring?
mitochondria DNA is transferred from mother to progeny not from father because during fusion of ova and sperm , only nucleus of the sperm has the chance to enter the ova (which is having the mitochondria).... fathers mitochondria doesn't get a chance to get into ova so there is no possibility of father's mitochondrial DNA to be inherited.... that is the reason geneticist say that mitochondrial DNA is inherited from mother not father
chandhuru is right good job
I'll repeat: good job @chandhuru http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paternal_mtDNA_transmission The restriction is not universal among species, however, and there are believed to be very, very, very rare examples in humnas.
@telliott99 how can paternal and maternal mtDNA recombine?
Sperm move really fast and have quite a few mitochondria. So it's not inconceivable that sometimes one mitochondrion might end up in the fertilized egg. That would give (very rare) paternal inheritance (really mixed, since most would still be from the mother).
@telliott99 but when father's mitochondria gets into the ova it s degraded by ubiquitin pathway... one more thing how can the mtDNA resent inside the mitochondria involve in recombination with mother's mtDNA
I didn't know that about degradation. And I didn't mean to suggest physical recombination.
@telliott99 ok.
