Is it a bad idea to get an old upright piano free off craigslist and then pay a tuner to tune it up?
I'm wondering if something like this is at all feasible, or if it's likely that I will need to get intensive work done on the piano...

It is not a bad idea... not necessarily. You need to ask questions though.

Talk to the seller beforehand and ask them what kind of condition the piano's in. Generally, they'll want to avoid any misconceptions/disagreements and will supply you with more information. 
I think it is feasible.

It is possible, however you must make sure the piano is in good condition and if it is seems like the price is too good to be true then most likely it is and they may be ripping you off.

If the cost of tuning is equal to the cost of getting an upright piano, the feasibility would not be ideal. It would have better if you had purchased a brand new upright piano. However, if the cost is much lower than the market value or original value of the upright piano, it could be considered feasible if that cost falls a certain range. This basis would involve marginal price calculations.

I would recommend picking up the piano for free and getting it tuned. In the research I have done it seems the cost of a tuning is roughly $100, but could cost more based on how bad it is.
