I asked a question about Parallel lines earlier how do i do perpendicular ones? Find the equation of the perpendicular line to each of the following that passes through the point indicated. x = -5 passing through the point (-1,- 6)

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

perpendicular line is negative reciprocal slope of the given line

OpenStudy (anonymous):

prity much

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it'd be like 5 for this one? like opposite?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the slope of the perpendicular line times the slope of the parrallel line equals -1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just flip 5/1over and change the sighn

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

close...you have to take the reciprocal of 5

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

wait...why 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats fliping it over right

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

x = 5 is a vertical line...so the perpendicular line should be a horizontal line make sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that woukd be the slope

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

so the perpendicular line would look something like y = something

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

got it @Lunarwolf58 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but the slope wold be 0

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

no...slope of vertical line is undefined

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its making more sense trying to work it out now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that would make sence since they does not cange

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

go for it :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the y not yhey
