2x^2+10x-208=0

Parth (parthkohli):

A good start might be dividing both sides by 2(that makes this equation simplified).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

After that, I would probably just use the quadratic formula: \(x=\dfrac{-b\pm\sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}\)

Parth (parthkohli):

Or if you want some mental exercise, do factoring :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, yeah, it does factor easy enough doesn't it. I tend to just quadratic formula because it's easy, but this will factor pretty easily too.

hero (hero):

You don't necessarily have to do the mental exercise to factor.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This doesnt help ... at all .

Okay, do you know how to factor a polynomial? After you divide by 2, this polynomial is x^2+5x-104=0. So you need numbers that multiply to -104 and sum to 5. Can you find those two numbers?

hero (hero):

2(x^2 + 5x - 104) = 0 Divide both sides by 2 to get x^2 + 5x - 104 = 0 Now solve this: ac = -104 a + c = 5

hero (hero):

Hint: use substitution to solve
