Can someone help me solve, -4x - 5 > -9 and describe the graph of the solution. (without giving me the answer) x > 1; closed circle on 1, shading to the right x < 1; closed circle on 1, shading to the left x < 1; open circle on 1, shading to the left x > 1; open circle on 1, shading to the right

OpenStudy (amistre64):

spose the > was an =, how would you solve for x ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

+5 to both sides

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good start -4x - 5 > -9 +5 +5 ------------ -4x > -4 keep going

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then do -4 divide on both sides

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good, but we have to keep something in mind when we multiply or divide by a negative -4x > -4 /-4 /-4 --------- x ?? 1 we have to flip the sign around

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so x<1??

OpenStudy (amistre64):

for example -5 < 2 , this is apparent; but if we multiply both sides by -1 we get 5 < -2 , which is false; so to correct it we flip the sign 5 > -2

OpenStudy (amistre64):

x < 1 is correct, not to determine a solid or open circle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (amistre64):

solid means we include it; open means we get near to it, but never include it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (amistre64):

so, would you say x < 1 is an open or closed circle on the graph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x < 1; open circle on 1, shading to the left ?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank you for the help.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

youre welcome
