Nathan, Joshua, Michelle, and Denise were in a room where a porcelain vase was found broken. When an inquiry was conducted by the building caretaker, each made a statement. Nathan: Denise broke the vase. Joshua: Michelle did it. Michelle: I did not do it. Denise: Joshua lied when he said Michelle did it. The caretaker knew that only two statements were true and concluded that Denise broke the vase. Describe in complete sentences the method you use to show that the caretaker made an incorrect conclusion.

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

so two are true and two are false

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

try; if the frist statement is true , the the second is false , the third is true , and the last is also true, so 3T:1F, this dosent work, try something eles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im still confused. I never did this before this is my first time..

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

can you see what i did to try

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

notice how if one statement is assumed to be true or false , the other will also become true or false because of logic

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Statement 1 is true. Statement 2 is false. Statement 3 is true. Statement 4 is true. ??

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

notice only one of the first two statements, can be true at once , this makes the other false

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

lets try state, 2 is True what do we get

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

1 F 2 T 3 4

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

can you work out the rest of the table?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

F T

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

if 2 Michelle did it. is true is 4 Joshua lied when he said Michelle did it. T/F

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4. F

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

1 F 2 T 3 F 4 F so we get one true and three false, this dident work either, try 3=T

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if 3 is true we are going to get the same results we just did that one for number 2. but how do i describe in complete sentences the method you use to show that the caretaker made an incorrect conclusion. how do we solve for this ?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

guess and check ,?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

to find the solution assume a solution and determine the complete state

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

check if the conditions are right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they are.

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

did you find the solution where two statements are lies and two are truths

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No.. Wait... Joshua broke the vase

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

a dammager of vases and a liar , bad Joshua

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok so now for the quetion like how would i describe in complete sentences the method you use to show that the caretaker made an incorrect conclusion?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

oh i didn't read that bit.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope the only information I have is this Nathan, Joshua, Michelle, and Denise were in a room where a porcelain vase was found broken.

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

oh so the caretaker concluded Denise broke the vase ,

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

Denise≠Joshua

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, but the question says how do we prove the caretaker made a incorrect conclusion

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

im wondering what the caretaker was thinking ,,, 1 T 2 F 3 T 4 ~f, maybe he got confuse and believed josh was innocent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk lol im confused now

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

how did the caretaker get messed up?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not sure ..

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

we know josh was guilty because we solved the system

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

comparing the caretakers solution to the solve system we could see contradiction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think i get it now im typing my answer when im done i will send it to you to see if you agree

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

yeah sure it is hard to put these thing in to a paragraph, i would like to read what you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i know lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well the caretaker concluded that Denise broke the vase but in the next part it says use a method to prove that the caretaker made an incorrect conclusion. I am given that 2 statemnts are true and 2 statements are false.. Ok so if statement 1 is true then statement 2 is false. If statement 2 is false then statement 3 is false. If statemnt3 is false then statement 4 is true. So by solving that I know Denise did not brake the vase becaue we have 3 true an 1 false. So now we assume statement 2 is true so if statement 2 is true then statement 1 is false. If statement 2 is true then statement 3 is false. If statement 3 is false then statement 4 is false. So we have 3 false and 1 true. So therefore Joshua broke the glass because I solved the system and he is guilty.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@UnkleRhaukus thats my answer lol ^^ do you agree ?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

it is accurate , but ,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but what ?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

maybe a short hand notation, in the forth sentence you could eliminate the word statement - If 2 is false then 3 is false. If 3 is false then 4 is true.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why that sentence ?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

its good the the word statement at the start of the paragrapgh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. can you help me with another question?
