the most important factor in the british conquest of india during the 18th century was the A. addiction of millions of indians to opium B. superiority of british machine guns C. political disunity in india D. willingness of the british government to pay for an invasion

maybe the answer is c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Definitely political unity - The Mughal Empire was in absolute chaos. The Hindus and the Muslim Mughals detested and distrusted each other severely. It shows in the Sepoy Rebellion where although the Indians successfully rebelled and nearly drove the British out, political disunity prevented them from succeeding.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It is not A, because the British grew opium in India and many Chinese were addicted to it which was a major detriment to their Empire, not the Indians.

It is not B, because the first true machine gun, the Maxim was only invented in the 19th century after the American Civil War.

I do not believe it was D, because of the East India Company and how it was the source of funding that created the British Empire, not the monarchy itself through active support.
