A piecewise function is like a normal function except that the x value is limited. In this case, y=-x^2 is limited to x values of x<1 meaning when you plot it on a graph, you only show teh values of x that are less then 1.

it's piece wise function because when x=1 y varies linearly that is y=x but as becomes <1y varies with the negative square of x which clearly shows it has two different part of a single function that varies partly

well for X>1 , condition has not been mentioned over here...so you need not to worry in that part of function where y= something for x>1 what is that something, it may be varying exponentially, linearly or may be a cubic variation
