How is Nick and Gatsby's relationship different and same as George and Lennie's relationship?

Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby and Lennie and George in Of Mice and Men share similar relationships in that they are very close to one another. However, this closeness is also the source of the main contrast in their relationships. Where Nick and Jay's relationship is like two best friends, or perhaps brothers in a sense, George and Lennie's relationship is more like a parent child relationship.

On one hand, Nick and Jay share a similar intellect making them equals at least in the intellectual sense. It would make no sense for Jay to treat Nick like a child simply because of his standing. Therefore, Jay and Nick operate and act on the same level.

On the other hand, Lennie's simple mindedness puts him on a lower level that George. This puts George in a position of caretaker when it comes to Lennie. It make sense that George treats Lennie like a child because Lennie has the intellect of a child.

@Riza By the way her name is Daisy. You should read it. It is not too long and it is a really, really good novel.
