identify GCF then factor the expression 2x^7+4x^6-6x^5+4x^4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what do they all have in common?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 x^4 is the GCF

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i would say the 2x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you pull 2 x^4, you get \[ 2 x^4 (2 - 3 x + 2 x^2 + x^3) \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes 2x now they all have a least how many powers? We see 7,6,5,4 so the least of them is....?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4 so 2x^4 is the gcf

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes great! Now you simply remove that from the problem to solve the rest of it. The coefficients (numbers without a power) will be divided by 2 and each power you will subtract 4 from

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so since the x^4 goes to the begining its gone from the equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes that number will end up as just a single number with no power in the final answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the correct answer for the 5ac^2-5ca^2 was 5ca(a-c)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Take 2x^4 from 2x^7 and what will you have left?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x^3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Close 2/2=1 so there will be no coefficient in that one. So the first number will be reduced to x^3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry about that last problem. Can't be right 100% of the time. I double checked with my computer and it had it with 5 in the parenthesis in front of each term

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you have a program that you run these tbhrough that you could suggest? its no problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes I use Microsoft mathematics. You can download the program for free from the Microsoft website.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok cool thanks alot

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem
