Earlier historians coined the term to describe the medieval period between the Renaissance and the fall of Rome - that it was a dark period of European civilization marked by a relative lack of records in many parts of the Continent. Historians were literally "in the dark" on many events in that period of time hence, the "Dark" Ages. The more romantic use indicated the loss of "light" in the world with the fall of the Roman Empire as mankind scraped itself together over centuries into the Renaissance. But that was awhile ago. Since then, research methods have improved expanding historians' understanding of that period, so now the term is seen as something of an archaic throwback. It's still tossed around because it has been part of the historical lexicon for so long, but historians are generally trying to avoid using it because we know so much more of that period today. When it is used by historians now, it's usually to indicate a specific period of time in the medieval era marked by a lack of any records or scholarly understanding than as a metaphor pointing to ignorance and superstition.

The correct answer is 'the era seemed less important than the Renaissance and the Roman Empire.'
