Lauren's speed changes at some point in the middle of her trip, so we can split it into two pieces to find the time the first part took. The first part of the trip was a distance "d" at a speed "s" in an amount of time "t." d=sxt The second part is also a certain distance that equals its speed times the time it took her. 5mph x .5hrs is a distance of 2.5 miles. The total trip minus the second part will give the distance of the first part so 3.5mi - 2.5mi = 1 mile. So we set up the equation as 1mi = 3mph x t. Dividing 1mi/3mph gives us 1/3 an hour. To get from hours to minutes, multiply by 60. The time then is 20 minutes.
