just a conceptual question : is 112/788 a rational number?

mathslover (mathslover):

I know the ans. but want to know from you all.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a rational number is an integer or a fraction and 1112/788 is a fraction so therefore it is rational :)

mathslover (mathslover):

Hmn i will wait for others reply @sauravshakya and @Yahoo! you want to tell your opinion?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i also Go...with yummy

OpenStudy (shubhamsrg):

yes its ration.. p/q form,,ofcorse..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

of course it is a rational number

mathslover (mathslover):

WRONG EVERY ONE rational numbers are those numbers who can be represented in p/q form where p and q are integers and q is not equal to zero but also the fraction must be simplified... hence 112/788 is NOT rational number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Any number which can written in p/q ------- Rational

mathslover (mathslover):

no yahoo it must be in simplified form also

OpenStudy (anonymous):

56/394 = 23/197

mathslover (mathslover):

I just found the proof my answer: http://www.allmathwords.org/en/r/rationalnumber.html

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since all rational numbers can be represented as the ratio of two integers, the fraction can be written as where and . Using the properties of multiplication, Since a1, a2, b1 and b2 are integers, a1b2 and a2b1 are also integers, is a rational number.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

@mathslover http://www.mathsisfun.com/rational-numbers.html check out the examples there...it says 55/100 is a rational number. please explain that hten

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

in your link \[\frac{12.6}{7}\]that can be simplified too..but it says it's a rational number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ya..... @lgbasallote has got some point

mathslover (mathslover):

hmn i am giving better and reliable link

mathslover (mathslover):

they must be in simplified form

OpenStudy (anonymous):

u see 23/197

mathslover (mathslover):

Note that ratios can be reduced (as fractions are) by dividing each quantity by the common factors of all the quantities. This is often called "cancelling." As for fractions, the simplest form is considered to be that in which the numbers in the ratio are the smallest possible integers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i see a math battle coming up

OpenStudy (callisto):

''A rational number is a real number that can be expressed exactly as the ratio of two integers.[1]'' It doesn't say that it must be simplified fraction.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Simplified Form

mathslover (mathslover):

that is a simple definitions but if we go deeper in that we will find the above part as i mentioned above

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

well leave this everything.................. What I know is that all of you are correct INCLUDING @mathslover...... Even mathslover has got an important point........ while proving that any number rational or irrational we take it as for granted that the numerator and denominator don't have any common factor except 1

mathslover (mathslover):

also for your all information : SOURCE : wikipedia @vishweshshrimali5 that is just a discussion

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

@mathslover i get your point, a rational number it the actual precise ratio of portions x to portions y, without any common factors

mathslover (mathslover):

right...

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

I can't see what's going on everyone is typing a reply

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

my post is continuously going down....... :'(

mathslover (mathslover):

as vishweshshrimali5 mentioned: the numerator and denominator must have HCF as 1

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

ok wait everyone for 1 minute please

mathslover (mathslover):

do any1 has doubt left

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Let me say a point

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, 4/2 isnt a rational number

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

See I ask u all is g (acc. due to gravity) is a constant ?

mathslover (mathslover):

no @vishweshshrimali5

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

@sauravshakya @UnkleRhaukus @lgbasallote @Yahoo! and everyone else

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

@mathslover it seems the definition you posted (Note that ratios can be reduced (as fractions are) by dividing each quantity by the common factors of all the quantities. This is often called "cancelling." As for fractions, the simplest form is considered to be that in which the numbers in the ratio are the smallest possible integers. ) is about ratio..not rational numbers

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

@lgbasallote first answer my question please

mathslover (mathslover):

A rational number is a number that can be written as a simple fraction (i.e. as a ratio). @lgbasallote

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope

mathslover (mathslover):

this 1 sentence has all the points

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

furthermore...that definition was under REDUCTION of ratios...

OpenStudy (callisto):

simple fraction =/= simplified fraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ACTUALLY, acc. due to gravity differs from place to place

mathslover (mathslover):

@Callisto do you agree with common ration?

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Well what I want to say is that........... It is NOT wrong saying that g IS a constant because we all take g = 9.8 m/s^2 in all numericals

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

keyword *can*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

only ratonal numbers can be exp in p/q form

mathslover (mathslover):

right saurav since "g" at poles > g at equator

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Has anyone of you ever taken different values of g for numericals

OpenStudy (callisto):

I can't believe 4/2 is not a rational number...

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

A rational number is a number that CAN be written as a simple fraction it doesnt say "A rational number is a number that IS written as a simple fraction"

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Nope why because we take it as granted We want to make things simple

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

But, what is the reality that g is not a constant

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

just because something CAN be done doenst mean it HAS to be done

mathslover (mathslover):

no @vishweshshrimali5 i only take g = 9.8 m/s^2 @Callisto you can take that in regular answering etc. but notice that if we go deeper in this topic we have : 4/2 is a fraction but not a rational number

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

6.7 G is a constant 9.8 N depends of location

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

so you're saying \[\frac 21\] is not rational and 2 i rational right?

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Similar is the case here whenever someone asks us 4/2 is a rational number ?????? we say YES we never look out for the correct definition

mathslover (mathslover):

right.. @vishweshshrimali5

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

But,what is wrong there 4/2 = 2

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

and 2 is rational so we say 4/2 is also rational

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

if you tell me that 2 is rational and 2/1 is not rational then i'll commit suicide... 2 is not expressed as a quotient of two integers...

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

what have we done ???????? we have simplified the concept for our ease otherwise that would create the same problem as here

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

i'd say \[\frac21\]is perfectly rational

mathslover (mathslover):

of course it is @UnkleRhaukus since it is in simplest form

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

but according to mathslover it should be 2 :|

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

@lgbasallote , @mathslover , @Callisto , @Yahoo! , @sauravshakya etc.. no one is wrong in this discussion what @mathslover is saying is the correct definition and what everyone else is saying is the simplified version of it because even simplified fraction = non simplified fraction So, I think that this is the right time to close this discussion And at last hats off @UnkleRhaukus for his perfect explanation

OpenStudy (callisto):

Is 4:2 a ratio?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

2/1 is not in simplest form @mathslover ...2 is the simplest form

mathslover (mathslover):

no @lgbasallote 2= 2/1 both are in simplified form since their HCF IS 1 but 4/8 has not a common factor as 1

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

No @lgbasallote 2 is not the simplified form of a rational number

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

i think a rational number is a function of two numbers

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Yes @UnkleRhaukus

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

exactly my point @vishweshshrimali5

mathslover (mathslover):

what i was saying that: simplified form that is HCF is 1

mathslover (mathslover):

2/1 has HCF = 1 but 4/8 has HCF = ? can u tell me lgba at least it is not equal to 1

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

@mathslover do you agree that 4/8 CAN be expressed in simplest form?

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

And @lgbasallote that is what @mathslover is saying !!!!!

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

no @vishweshshrimali5 it's not

mathslover (mathslover):

@lgbasallote yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is product of two semi definite matrices again a semi definite ? see A is semi definite one .that follows uAu' >= 0 ; where u is any column vector .

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Mathslover kindly close this question now please That will create a math war here !!!!

mathslover (mathslover):

is it going to be a war or is just a discussion? confused

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

then it fits your definition "A rational number is a number that can be written as a simple fraction" it's rational. period

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Thanks a lot

mathslover (mathslover):

can i continue this discussion again?

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

NO

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is product of two semi definite matrices again a semi definite ? see A is semi definite one .that follows uAu' >= 0 ; where u is any column vector . hey did you get what i am asking

mathslover (mathslover):

oops :'( ok

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

@lgbasallote no more discussion

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):
