is zero a natural number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i thinnk so

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you(:

OpenStudy (kainui):

It's kind of not a very defined thing. It's better off talking about the difference between the positive integers and non-negative integers to define a set that doesn't contain 0 and the set that does.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(:, so wasi right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, okay, is zero an integer?

OpenStudy (kainui):

It depends on which textbook you look at and who your teacher is lol. Yes, 0 is an integer.

OpenStudy (mathmate):

I seems to depend on which side of the Atlantic you're on! So take Katnut's advice: it's not well defined and depends a lot on the textbook, university, or even professor.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

0 is the most mysterious number. rivaled only by 42

OpenStudy (anonymous):

someone helpme with my question???

OpenStudy (kainui):

e still is a weird number to me.

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Straight quote from Wikipedia: "There is no universal agreement about whether to include zero in the set of natural numbers: some define the natural numbers to be the positive integers {1, 2, 3, ...}, while for others the term designates the non-negative integers {0, 1, 2, 3, ...}. The former definition is the traditional one, with the latter definition first appearing in the 19th century. Some authors use the term "natural number" to exclude zero and "whole number" to include it; others use "whole number" in a way that excludes zero, or in a way that includes both zero and the negative integers."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so basically, no one really knows?

OpenStudy (kainui):

No one really knows would be wrong to say I think... It's more like no one really agrees on how to define it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, well can you help me with this one too? Select all of the following true statements if R = real numbers, I = integers, and W = {0, 1, 2, ...}. W ⊂ I R ⊂ W 0 ∈ I Ø ⊂ R {0, 1, 2, ...} ⊆ W -2 ∈ W

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i had selected W ⊂ I R ⊂ W 0 ∈ I and {0,1,2,...} _cW but i only got partial credit
