what is the scientific name of ascaris

OpenStudy (trancenova):

Hello, I think you might be a little confused... "Ascaris is a genus of parasitic nematode worms known as the "large intestinal roundworms"" (from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ascaris ). The genus Ascaris, is its scientific name (a genus is a group of organisms that are closely related and is one level above species). Does that make sense? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ascaris is the scientific name. Basically its a roundworm. The full scientific name for it is Ascaris lumbricoides. And don't trust Wikipedia. They are not considered a reliable source because anyone can change the information. Your best best is to search in a real encyclopedia or visit a credible site on species such as http://pioneerunion.ca.schoolwebpages.com/education/components/scrapbook/default.php?sectiondetailid=2798&linkid=nav-menu-container-4-13541 or http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/classification/Ascaris.html

OpenStudy (hanah):

well ascaris is a scientific name the common name of ascaris is roundworm

OpenStudy (trancenova):

-Hmm I would agree with you on the not trusting Wikipedia - however in this case wikipedia says the same thing as your references but it is awlays important to check :) Ascaris is a genus, which means that it includes more than one species, such as Ascaris lumbricoides and Ascaris suum. However I haven't heard "Ascaris" used as a common name and so it may refer to a particular species (as a common name).
