15x-10/5= what

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can someone help me

OpenStudy (phi):

is this \[ \frac{15x-10}{5}= \] ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (phi):

you should put parens in like this (15x-10)/5 = because the way you wrote it means \[ 15x - \frac{10}{5} =\] which is a different question.

OpenStudy (phi):

but for your question you know that when you add or subtract fractions, you need a common denominator, right? \[ \frac{15x}{5} - \frac{10}{5} = \frac{15x-10}{5} \] so you can "undo" this fraction and write it as shown on the left: \[ \frac{15x}{5} - \frac{10}{5} = \] can you simplify these fractions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (phi):

OK, look at the first fraction \[ \frac{15x}{5} = \frac{15}{5}\cdot \frac{x}{1}=\frac{15}{5}\cdot x \] those all mean the same thing. can you simplify the last version \[ \frac{15}{5} \cdot x \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3

OpenStudy (phi):

almost. 15/5 is 3 but then you multiply by x (x is a number, you just don't know its value) to multiply 3*x you write 3*x or just 3x so \[ \frac{15}{5} \cdot x= 3x \] now simplify the other fraction \[ \frac{-10}{5} \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.5

OpenStudy (phi):

how many times does 5 go into 10?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2

OpenStudy (phi):

but notice it is -10 so the answer is -2 (because -2*5= -10) so the answer is \[ \frac{15x-10}{5}=3x-2 \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

OpenStudy (phi):

Do you see what we did? we divided 5 into 15x (and got 3x) and divided 5 into -10 and got -2, so the answer is 3x-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes
