Hello everyone. I just started with physics 1 and I'm wondering if I should study another subject first like plane trigonometry?
Trigonometry is definitely helpful for Physics, but you don't need extensive background on it. Just the understanding of cos, sin, tan and pythagorean theorem can help you survive. :)
Thank you :)
If you intend to continue onto advanced physics, then I'd recommend applications of Calculus (single variable would suffice).
Thank you!
You are welcome.
Yes you can get away without an extensive background in trig. However, I wouldn't recommend it. Sure all you need is an "understanding" of cos, sin, and the pythagorean theorem to survive. To thrive you need a solid background in trig. For example, you should know the cos, sin, and tan functions, their range and domain. You should know the fundamental identities, their inverses and properties. There are a myriad number of details that are easy to take for granted (which is what I think some of the other respondents are doing) that are necessary to "understand" cos and sin. Trig functions are used in almost EVERY SINGLE CORNER OF THE SUBJECT OF PHYSICS, YOU SHOULD HAVE MORE THAN AN UNDERSTANDING OF SIN AND COS. YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED A WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF IT. DON'T APPROACH THE STUDY OF PHYSICS WITH WHAT YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH NOT KNOWING. IT'S A FOOLS ERRAND
I don't know about before. But Your complex math and different sciences all are intertwined in each other. For the sake of understanding better. I don't think it would hurt. I like chemistry, physics and a few other things. And I feel as though my understanding improves more as I start to see how mathematics tie into other related fields from electronics to geology. You might check with a Pro wihat areas are most complimentary to each other.
Math is the language of physics so....
