Desperately need help with algebra! "A laptop advertisement states that internal parts operate at 55° Celsius plus or minus 15°. Write an absolute value equation to represent the situation. Then solve the equation and write it as a compound inequality. State the meaning of the solution."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

55|-15|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright, thanks. How do I solve an absolute value equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well i'm not perfect at math so i might be wrong, but from what i understand absolute value equations can have 2 answers, because |6| could mean +or-6.. absolute value means it moves in either direction on the number line

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\(\pm15\) degrees is the variation, right ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

first put the equation for variation, next we can account for 55 ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So 55±15?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

call "x" the temperature of internal parts at any given time |x| = 15 but since, the temperature varies around +55, we need to translate the graph to right side : => |x-55| = 15

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

yep ! 55 \(\pm\) 15 is correct, but you need to still solve the absolute equation above and write it as compound inequality ! good luck :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright, thanks! The compound inequality would be 40 ≤ x ≤ 70, yes?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

thats right !! gw :D

Thank you for the help!
