Can someone please help? I do not understand anything about this question: If p is a negative number, and 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can eliminate three of them immediately. No matter what is in the parenthesis, anything whether positive or negative when squared is ever negative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is NEVER negative? ok, that makes sense. But why do they write the p between the lines? what does that mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

P>s or p<-s -> p²>s² ->p²-s²>0 P+s<0 ->s²-p²<0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That means, "the absolute value of". So since p is negative, it's saying that s is between zero and the absolute value of p. If p is, say, -5, then s must be between 0 and 5.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, so tell me if I did this right: Imagining that s=1 and |p|=2, so: 0<1<2 We've already eliminated choices A-C so I'm starting w/ D: D. 2²-1²=4-1=3 E. 1²-2²=1-4=-3 So the correct answer would be E

You got it. It essentially boils down to a smaller than p number squared minus p squared.

Awesome!!! Thank you! :)
