You need a strong historical context of the information presented to you before you can take good notes on it. In History, a good note taker is also a good narrator. In other words, you need to be able to take the information in a History textbook and translate it into a good story in a format that you can best understand. A similar version of doing this would be how spark notes takes American classic novels and posts interesting videos summarizing the novels. What you see is the video, however someone had to actually write the narrative and draw the interesting pictures. You on the other hand just need to create the narrative in a historical context and divide it into "segments".

Spark Note's "To Kill A MockingBird" Video is probably a good example of "narrating". Good historians are able to do the same thing with describing history. Good notes would reflect this same level of understanding. Here's a link to the video: http://www.sparknotes.com/sparknotes/video/mocking
