Find Slope x = -2

OpenStudy (shamim):

90 degree

OpenStudy (mathlegend):

I thought slope was \[\frac{ y2-y1 }{ x2-x1 } /\]

OpenStudy (shamim):

ur line is just parallel to y axis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well there is an undefined slope because x = -2 which on a graph is like |dw:1345703932766:dw| the line is on the left if you can't tell as you can see it is just a straight line so there is no change in y for every x value. slope is undefined

OpenStudy (anonymous):

slope is a ratio of change in y over change in x. In this case, take 2 points say: (-2,0) and (-2,1). Here change in y = 1 - 0 = 1 and change in x = -2 - (-2) = 0 so slope = 1/0 which is undefined

OpenStudy (theviper):

U can see graph here

OpenStudy (anonymous):

converting from \[ m = \frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1} \] to a value in degrees can be done by taking a tan inverse.\[ Slope = \tan ^{-1} m\]

OpenStudy (shamim):

slope means angle of ur line with positive x axis. so ur equation of line will make a angle 90 degree with x axis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so undefined slope corresponds to 90 degree angle

OpenStudy (shamim):

i think the slope is not undefined here. it will b 90 degree

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yo you guys are taking it too far just leave it as it is. UNDEFINED He is not asking for anything else. close the questions give me best response :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the slope m = 1/0 = undefined (the number undefined). And corresponding value in degrees will be \[ \tan ^{-1} \frac{1}{0} = 90 ^\circ\] Refer to the above replies by me.

OpenStudy (shamim):

i think u r doing wrong

OpenStudy (shamim):

slope means the angle between a line n posive x axis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

really guys. still going on with this. this is a very simple Algebra I questions no trigonometry needed.

OpenStudy (shamim):

ur equation will not give the right result always

OpenStudy (shamim):

my answer is for gps

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well gps should have asked this in a new question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In equation \[ y = mx + c \] m is called the slope of the line. It corresponds to the tan of the angle of the angle @shamim is talking about. Please understand this. You normally do not give the slope in degrees.

OpenStudy (shamim):

ya. here its true
