no exit by jeal paul sartre the general theme: literary devices used to convey the theme of the work: this question is ment to be very short. an answer, then about a sentence or two explaining the answer. But for this, i just need a theme. one word. there are several, such as courage and isolation, but i would like an opinion from others.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

as for literary devices, i have no clue. i have no read the book either

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

i think the theme is cooperation or something about living with others. Since in the story, the characters' "hell" is each other. They cannot live with one another. That's why they suffer. But if they could live alongside one another peacefully, then they would not experience "hell" does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would the theme be cowardice, would that seem to make sence?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes that makes sence a bit.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

why cowardice? only one character was a coward there...i think it was only Garcin who was a coward..

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

but maybe cowardice can be a theme

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont really have any explanation for the theme of cowardice. i read it in an article, i dont have the link though. but it made sence sort of when i read it.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

after all, during the start of the play, they run from the truth about what they did when they were living

OpenStudy (anonymous):

may i ask why they ran from the truth?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

well at the start, they were lying about the reasons why they were in Hell.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, so they lied about their reasons, and they ran from the truth

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, well i finished the theme, how about the literary devices, i want to know if this site is a good source? http://quizlet.com/9231203/no-exit-literary-terms-flash-cards/

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

...those are literary terms... not literary devices..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im sorry..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be in the analysis?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

what analysis?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/noexit/section4.rhtml

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i actually have about 15 minutes left to do this

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

i actually know a literary device in the play...but it has no connection with the theme you picked

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it doesnt need to be in connectionnn with the theme

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

the literary device i remember is an allegory. It is shown through the paper knife present in Hell. It is a reference to Sartre's philosophical treatise "Being and Nothingness"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how exactly can you relate the knife to "Being and Nothingness"

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

..you'll know by knowing the essence of a paper knife :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol haha. then :) thats enough of literary deivices, how about historical implications?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i get that the book was written in 1944, and world war ll happened in 1944, is there anything i could say to make that interesting?>

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

The paper knife was invented because someone had an idea to create an object that can open letters. However, the essence of the paper knife came first, because someone saw that they needed an opener before the knife was created. So, in a sense, the essence of the paper knife came BEFORE the existence. however, for humans, it's different. You existed first. No one decided what you will become. You are free to become whatever you want to be. This is the symbolism of the paper knife

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

what do you mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one question says : "Historical implications on the work of the author" and i have an answer to that saying "World war ll happened in 1944, im guessing that based on personal experience Sartre could relate the cowardliness of the people who fought in the war, as they were in "hell"" i know it isnt the best answer, but i need something quickly

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

did you pick no exit on your own?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

sadly i dont know about the history of jean-paul sartre nor of no exit, so i cannot help you there sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats perfectly fine!! :) i finished that question but the question im still strugling on is about the literary devices

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

i already told you about literary devices

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the paper knife?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

yep

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

i gave you the explanation why it is an allegory

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

the paper knife, as a product of "essence before existence", is a symbolism of how humans are free to choose their destinies. Old french authors are very profound...it's hard to understand their logic lol

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

do you have any more questions @maariee ?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

about the no exit i mean

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ye sorry is "essence before existence" a quote from the book, right?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

yup

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

wait... "existence before essence" is the quote i think

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

^that is the idea of existensialism...the theme thingy of the no exit

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg thank you so much <3 i lov you now. bye!

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

okay bye
