pls help me explain scientific notation please

Its the way that scientists have decided to handle very large or very small numbers. It gets rid of unnecessary zeros.

It's a way of representing very large or very small numbers in the format \[a * 10^{b}\], where a can be any real number (mantissa) lesser than or greater than 0 and b is an integer (exponent). Try reading up about it in a maths textbook or wikipedia.

Another way to look at it is defining a number by multiplying by powers of 10. For example, you can think of 200 as 2 x 100. Since 100 is 10 x 10, this becomes 2 x 10^2 (ten to the power of 2). Similarly, 34500 can be written as 3.45 x 10000 or 3.45 X 10^4 (ten to the power of 4). Hope that helps.
