Can anyone at all help me with distinguishing and writing simple, complex, and compound sentences?
simple sentence is composed of ONE independent clause ONLY. i.e. The teacher is teaching the class. This is a simple sentence because there is only one subject (the teacher) and that subject is the one doing the verb (teaching) compound sentence is composed of TWO independent clauses i.e. The teacher is teaching the class, so the principal went out for a walk. There are two independent clauses here because there are two subjects (teacher and principal) and they are doing DIFFERENT verbs (teaching and went, respectively) You can determine compound sentences if the sentence has coordinating conjuctions For And But Yet Or So (also acronymed as FANBOYS) complex sentences are composed of INDEPENDENT CLAUSE and a DEPENDENT CLAUSE i.e. The teacher is teaching the class that she punished yesterday. in this case, the independent clause is "The teacher is teaching the class" and the dependent clause is "that she punished yesterday" does that help?
Yes we learned about fanboys in class. and what are subordinating conjunction?
subordinating conjunctions are the conjunctions that precedes the dependent clause (also called the subordinating clause). The subordinating conjunctions are your hint that you're in for a complex sentence because where there's a subordinating conjunction, there's sure to be a dependent clause
subordinating conjunctions link dependent clauses to independent clauses btw
and finally compound-complex sentences.
compound-complex is a combination of compound and complex sentences it is composed of 1 or more IC + 1 or more DC
