Write an essay in which you analyze the figurative language in a poem from this unit. • State which poem you chose, and explain why you chose it. • Identify a key metaphor, simile, or other example of figurative language in the poem. Explain why this figurative language is important to the poem’s meaning. • Analyze the meaning of the figurative language. Explain your analysis clearly. • Explain how the figurative language contributes to the tone of the poem. For example, explain how the poet’s word choices build or maintain a sense of formality or informality. Cite details to support your ideas. • Edit your essay for correct punctuation and spelling.

It’s about the ball, the bat, and the mitt. 5 Ball hits bat, or it hits mitt. Bat doesn’t hit ball, bat 1 0 meets it. Ball bounces off bat, flies air, or thuds ground (dud) 1 5 or it fits mitt. Bat waits for ball to mate. 2 0 Ball hates to take bat’s bait. Ball flirts, bat’s late, don’t 2 5 keep the date. Ball goes in (thwack) to mitt, and goes out (thwack) back 3 0 to mitt. Ball fits mitt, but not all the time. 3 5 Sometimes ball gets hit (pow) when bat meets it, and sails 4 0 to a place where mitt has to quit in disgrace. That’s about 4 5 the bases loaded, about 40,000 fans exploded. It’s about 5 0 the ball, the bat, the mitt, the bases and the fans. 5 5 It’s done on a diamond, and for fun. It’s about home, and it’s 6 0 about run

I didn't find any either. However look at the step carefully: * Identify a key metaphor, simile, ***or other example of figurative language*** in the poem. Explain why this figurative language is important to the poem’s meaning. Figurative language includes onomatopoeia, personification, hyperbole, along with similes and metaphors. If I'm not mistaken, I saw several examples of onomatopoeia Onomatopoeia - The use of a word to describe or imitate a sound (ex: "crack" "pop" "swoosh").

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry! Yes, "thwak!" "Pow!" are examples of onomatopoeia :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You could, in your own words, put the definition of onomatopoeia. Analyze how it makes the poem unique, how it affects this poem in particular. Every time you "hear" a sound it poetry, what do you think? For example, when you heard the "Thwack!", what it easier to imagine what was going on?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is what i got so far but it gots to be a hole page :) I chose the poem "Analysis of baseball" because my little brother loves baseball a lot. This is a short poem about baseball and far as i can see this is one of the only one that did not have a metaphor and i just looked up baseball metaphor and not one is in the poem unless the writer put a personal one in there and i don't understand it. But there is some figurative language or onomatopoeia how ever in line 17, 19 and 37 the words "whack" and "pow" are used.Just read line 25 to 39 !"Keep the date. Ball goes in (thwack) to mitt, and goes out (thwack) back to mitt. Ball fits mitt, but not all the time. Sometimes ball gets hit (pow) when bat meets it, and sails."Using sounds like that help the reader to know what is going on in the poem. Thwack indicates that the mat and mitt hit the ball hard

What about a format? For example: Introduction(step 1): I chose the poem "Analysis of baseball" because my little brother loves baseball a lot. (What are you going to write about in the essay? What topics are you going to discuss in the following paragraphs?) Paragraph 1(step 2): Talk about the figurative language that you found (onomatopoeia), and tell why you think it's important in this poem. You don't need to explain each and every sound you find...just use 2 or 3 examples and write about each one, in it's own individual sentence. Paragraph 2(step 3): Analyze the meaning of the figurative language. Paragraph 3(step 4): Explain how the figurative language contributes to the tone of the poem. For example, explain how the poet’s word choices build or maintain a sense of formality or informality. **Cite details to support your ideas.** Paragraph 4: You could make a short/quick conclusion summing it all up.
