your work was right, but check the values that you got, there might be an extraneous root.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your work was right, try plugging-in n = -3. on the original equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope, you were right when you got n = -3. its just that, we check our it, to know if we consider it as a value for n, since we are dealing with absolute value, there cold be an extraneous roots.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

before writing our answer, we must check the values that we got.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|-3-7| = 3(-3) - 1 can you tell me if we will get a true statement from here?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think you will get 10 = -10, so since its not right, we do not include n =-3, on our answer. okay ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

welcome.

hartnn (hartnn):

there is no mistake in solving that mathematically, but that equation has only one solution x=2......such equations can have only one solution.... x=-3 is not the solution because |n-7| is always positive so 3n-1 will always be positive, which implies,n must be positive only...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, you are right. thanks.
