in slope intercept equations what does b stand for

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y-intercept

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b is the y-intercept

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is there any difference or is it the same thing just repeated after the y intercept

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not sure what you mean.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like would the y intercept repeat it self right away or would the b not come until the end of the problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, in a linear equation there will only be one y-intercept. The 'b' part, just describes the rate of incline or decline of the line.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok then how would you find the x intercept if all you were given was that m=4 , b=-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y = 4x - 3. Set y equal to 0 and solve for x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0 = 4x - 3. Add 3 to both sides. Then solve for x by dividing by 4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummm which one or would they both give you the same results

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We both said the exact same thing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok... thanks i think i understand now
