Can someone help me find the difference of 9 11/12 - 4 2/3? I'm confused with thr denominators

Parth (parthkohli):

\[9{11 \over 12} - 4{2 \over 3} \implies {119 \over 12} - {14 \over 3} \implies \cdots \]Does that help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

11/12 - 2/3; So 12 and 3 are not the same. So we need to make them the same. Well 3 goes into 12, so 12 is going to be the common denominator. Leave 11/12 the same 11/12 - [(4/4)(2/3)] 11/12 - [4*2/3*4) 11/12 - 8/12; now subtract 3/12; reduce 1/4 <----------Answer

Parth (parthkohli):

Find the least common denominator, @chungerforever

Parth (parthkohli):

For that... just find the least common multiple of the denominators.

Isn't the LCD 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

hero (hero):

(9 - 4) + (11/12 - 2/3) Multiply 2/3 by 4/4 to get (9 - 4) + (11/12 - 8/12) Subtract to get: 5 + (3/12) Reduce 3/12 to get 5 1/4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so what do I do with that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, I get it! Thank you everyone!
