17. Which of the following is an example of a scientific inference? (1 point) The insect probably released a sticky liquid because it is upset and trying to defend itself. The butterfly has bright colors that make it easy for me to see when it lands on a plant. The ants live in colonies and they follow trails to find possible food sources. The bee stung me on the arm after I waved my hands trying to scare it away.
is it A?
Mary Mother of God, who writes these questions? Is there some way I can get on a committee to have their degrees taken away? Blech. The least awful choice is probably the first, because you are inferring (= guessing) the reason for an observation. That is, you observe the insect releasing a sticky liquid and you guess the reason for it (that it's trying to defend itself). Inference is the opposite of deduction: when you deduce something you go from a "why" to a "what" and when you infer something you go the other way, from a "what" to a "why." For example: "Since my balance is below $100, the $100 check I just wrote will bounce." That's a deduction. "Since the $100 check I just wrote bounced, my balance must be below $100." That's an inference. Deductions are always easier than inferenecs, because to get a deduction right you just need to be 100% logical and not forget any important factor. But to get an inference right there has to be nothing of which are unaware interfering. For example, you have to be sure that your check didn't bounce because the bank made a mistake, or because you forgot to sign the check, or because the merchant submitted it twice, and so forth. Since there are almost always unknowable things that might interfere, an inference is always trickier. The other three statements are pretty much observations.
@Carl_Pham Thanks your amazing, I understand completely. :D
