what is torque

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torque First paragraph gives several nice descriptions. More technically, torque is change in angular momentum over time, or the derivative if the torque is non-constant.

Torque = Turning Force. That is why an engine which has a large 'stroke' (distance the piston moves in the cylinder) it will have a higher torque than the same sized engine with a shorter stroke. People talk about horsepower and torque for car engines. It is possible to have high torque and low power and high power with low torque. Power comes from the amount and efficiency of the fuel burning. So a sports car may have a short-stroke V8 engine with high power, relatively low torque. A tractor has a long stroke 4 cylinder engine that has low power but greater torque.
