How do you find the perimeter in simplest form?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add all sides..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, add all the sides of the given figure.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

it depends on the figure. there is no fixed formula for perimeter but it's the sum of all the sides of the polygon like they said

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here are the sides it has: x-6 and x+8

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

is it a rectangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

then the perimeter is P = 2(L + w) so perimeter here is just P = 2( x - 6 + x + 8) do you know how to simplify that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

do you know what x + x is?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

hint: x + x is just like 1 + 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 + 1 is 2*1 So x + x = 2*x which can be written as 2x Similarly x + x + x + x + x = 5x and so on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

perimeter is just the sum of all sides. In case of rectangle, the opposite sides are equal. So, perimeter = (x-6) + (x+8) + (x-6) + (x+8) = (1x+1x+1x+1x+4) = 4x + 4 Ans.

Alright, I think I got it now. Thank you all for your help!
