how are integers and rational numbers the same

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

All integers are rational numbers, but the same is not true in reverse (ex: 1/2 is rational, but not an integer)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you mean in reverse as rational numbers are integers

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no, not all rational numbers are integers ex: 2 is rational since 2 = 2/1, 2 is also an integer but 1/3 is rational, but not an integer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how come 1/3 isnt a rational number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i mean integer

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it is a rational number

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

oh

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it isn't an integer since it has a decimal part 1/3 = 0.33333....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, i think im catching along

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok great

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is there an easier way that i might can get the hang of this

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

think of a pie cut into 3 pieces

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

a whole pie has 3 pieces, so 3/3 = 1 but a piece of that pie is 1/3, which is not the whole pie...so its not a whole number or integer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

gotcha THANK YOU SO MUCH!!:)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure thing
