6y^2-22y-40=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

use quadratic formula to find the roots...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

IT'S A QUADRATIC EQUATION.....FACTORIZE

OpenStudy (anonymous):

by 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2y(3y-11-20)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

FIND TWO NUMBERS THAT GIVES A PRODUCT OF -240 AND A SUM OF -22

OpenStudy (anonymous):

IT'S -30 AND 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THEN WRITE IT THIS WAY. . . 6y^2-30y+8y-40

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okwhere did you get -240 and-22

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-22 is the middle value.... i could have used just -40 but since y^2 has a coefficient which is 6 i multiply -40 by the coefficient before solving

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-22 is d coefficient of the middle value

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can u finish it now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats the next step

OpenStudy (anonymous):

group it in two places then factorize.... 6y(y-5)+8(y-5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the values inside the brackets are similar so we end up with...(6y+8)(y-5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and remember (6y+8)(y-5)=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that implies that 6y+8=0. . . OR y-5=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answers would be (-8/6,5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks
