How would i graph this equation? y = -1/6x + 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

slope = -1/6 y-intercept = 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well you can start by plotting the point (0,5) because you know the Y-intercept. Then you can find the X-intercept by replacing Y with zero Then you can replace X with some values to find some points ex if X is 2 then Y is (-1/6 times 2) + 5 and hence you have the X and Y values of a point Then draw the line.

i still dont understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What don't you understand ? is it the y/x intercept thing or the finding points thing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

finding points

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so You have the equation \[y= -1/6 x +5\] In every point there is an x and y value. (x, y). For ex (3,2) the x value is three and the y value is 2 . in this particular equation to find the Y value of a point we times the x value by -1/6 and then add 5. you can choose any number to be the x value and then put it into the equation to find the Y value. Ex the Y intercept is (0,5) because x has to equal to zero to find the Y int. to prove this put the 0 as the x and your answer will be 5. so ex. if we put 6 as x our answer for y will be 4 therefore at the point where x=6, y=4 so one point on that line is (6,4)

do you understand now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorta

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the x-intercept 30?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes I got 30 as well
