Select the equations that are parallel and perpendicular to y = -3x - 1 and that pass through the point (3, 1). parallel: y = -3x + 6 perpendicular: y =1/3 x + 2 2/3 parallel: y = -3x + 10 perpendicular: y =1/3 x parallel: y = -1/3 x perpendicular: y = -3x parallel: y = 1/3x + 1 perpendicular: y = 3x - 1
Parallel lines will have the same slope. In slope intercept form (y=mx+b), "m" is the slope. You can eliminate two choices quickly.
ok
and then just plug in the points to see which of the two works
So which two are eliminated?
c,d right?
Yes, now you can plug 3 in for "x" in the remaining two parallel functions and see which one gives you a result of 1.
ok one sec
If the parallel function checks out, test 3 in the perpendicular function and just make sure you still get 1 back. Just to be thorough.
B right?
You'd be correct.
Wow thanks for going though it with me :P
