whats the elimination method to solve a system of equations

OpenStudy (anonymous):

system of equations is 3+8b=17 a+3b=2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

multiply the bottom equation by 3 to make it become 3a+9b=2, that way you can subtract the 2 equations and eliminate the a

hero (hero):

Actually, the first equation you posted only has one variable in it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or you can multiply by -3 and add the two equations lol, I personally don't like multiplying by negatives so i multiply by positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

two equations are simplified by adding them or subtracting them.eliminates one variables so that the other variable can be found. I found this on another site.. but it seemed to help me out.. so I hope it helps you too ^.^

am confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think you forgot to put a for the first equation, it should be 3a+8b=17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg sorry its a+8b=17 a+3b=2
