why is there no limit for lim tan x as x approaches pi/2???????????????????????????????????????

OpenStudy (barrycarter):

Hint: look at the right side and left side limits.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they are asymptotes right? what is the difference between a limit and an asymptote?

OpenStudy (barrycarter):

A vertical asymptote means the graph is approaching infinity. A limit usually means the graph is approaching a specific number. An asymptote can mean that the limit is infinity, but, in this case, the left and right limits are plus and minus infinity, which are different.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if theres more than one asymptote there's no limit?

OpenStudy (barrycarter):

Correct. If there are two asymptotes at the same point that go to different infinities, there is no limit.

ohhh okay. thank you!
